Stockbridge amphitheater construction delayed by weather, not by coronavirus |

STOCKBRIDGE – The city of Stockbridge is continuing construction of its amphitheater.

The Stockbridge Amphitheater, located adjacent to Stockbridge City Hall on East Atlanta Road, broke ground in November. During the groundbreaking, Stockbridge Mayor Anthony Ford expressed hope that the facility would be ready around the time of the city’s 100th birthday in early August of this year.

However, city officials said on Thursday that the facility’s opening will take place in February or March of 2021.

According to Assistant City Manager Camilla Moore, the delay has been due to a higher than normal amount of days lost due to inclement weather, and not due to the coronavirus.

A report from the city of Stockbridge indicated that in January, the project lost 11 days due to inclement weather in January, 22 days in February and 13 days in March.

In fact, Moore said the coronavirus has had no impact on construction.

“Construction was considered essential (by the state of Georgia), so there was a set of guidelines for the construction industry for how workers are supposed to perform their work,” Moore said. “It was submitted, and H.J. Russell has been in compliance with that report for how workers are supposed to perform their duties.”

Moore said in the last several weeks, a lot of activity has happened on the site, and efforts have been accelerated with the good weather in the area lately.

Grading work is being conducted on the site, some of the piping, and underground infrastructure is being worked on now. In addition, headwalls are being constructed on the facility.
