Property tax hearings announced by Dawson County Board of Commissioners

The millage rate is the formula that calculates property taxes. One mill equals $1 for every $1,000 in assessed property value, which is 40% of the actual market value. The total millage rate is made up of the county’s rate and the school system’s rate.

“The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $300,000 is approximately $48.84,” county officials reported in a notice on the hearings. “The proposed tax increase for non-homestead property with a fair market value of $250,000 is approximately $40.70.”

Hearings on the proposed county millage rate will be held at the Dawson County Courthouse Building on Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and on Aug. 20 at 4 p.m.

Earlier this month, the Dawson County Board of Education also announced that it was expecting a property tax increase of 5.62%, due to a 0.803 mill increase to the school system’s maintenance and operations millage rate.

The Dawson County BOE will also hold three public hearings on its proposed millage rate. Those hearings will be held at 5 p.m. on Aug. 4, and 11:30  a.m. and 6 p.m. on Aug. 11 at the Dawson County Board of Education Central Office.
